The symposium was introduced by history of development of electron microscopes by FEI Vice President Dr. Peter Fruhstorfer and followed by scientific presentations from four prominent figures in the field of cryo-electron microscopy: Prof. Wolfgang Baumeister (MPI, Munich, DE), Dr. Alasdair Steven (NIH, Bethesda, USA), Prof. Christian Spahn (Charite Medical University, Berlin, DE) and Dr. David DeRosier (Brandeis University, Boston, USA). The symposium was followed by tours through the facility with demonstration of operation of the newly installed microscopes including a unique transmission electron microscope FEI Titan Krios that is available only in several research centers worldwide. This microscope is capable of imaging purified biomolecules to near-atomic resolutions or to visualize intracellular compartments and macromolecular complexes in the cell to recently unimaginable details in 3D. The event was visited by over 100 participants.
