Central European Institute of Technology (CEITEC) at Masaryk University invites applications for the following position:

EUROPEAN RESEARCH AREA (ERA) CHAIR

in Chemical and Cellular Biology

Excellent scientists are invited to apply for the ERA Chair position established at CEITEC at Masaryk University within the prestigious European grant (total budget of 2.7 mil. EUR) which was awarded only to 11 research institutions in Europe. CEITEC is a research consortium of 61 research groups which are involved in a broad range of interdisciplinary projects utilizing recently acquired state-of-the-art instrumentation and technological expertise across the materials and life sciences. See more at www.era-chair.eu.

The ERA Chair holder is expected to possess expertise in Chemical and Cellular Biology, specifically in the exploration of cellular systems by advanced imaging methods and their manipulation by means of small organic molecules and/or state-of-the-art physical methods.Previous experience in chemical biology, nano-devices for cell biology and cell imaging on the part of the applicant is preferred and will be evaluated favourably during the selection process.

In addition, the position holder will have the opportunity to influence scientific development at Masaryk University as the main international scientific advisor to the rector of Masaryk University.

The selected candidate will be offered the following:

  • Associate or Full Professorship;
  • Tenure track with initial appointment for 4.5 years;
  • Internationally competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience (up to a gross monthly salary of 7,800 EUR),
  • Salary for 6 full-time researchers (660,000 EUR in total);
  • Start-up package for instrumentation (250,000 EUR);
  • Consumables (80,000 – 120,000 EUR/year);
  • Laboratory and office space for the ERA Chair research team + students;
  • Access to existing state-of-the-art instrumentation;

The candidate’s international reputation and research excellence will be assessed mainly by considering his/her publications in top international peer-reviewed scientific journals.He/she is also expected to have a proven record in securing significant research funding and experience in managing research projects.

Applications should include a Curriculum Vitae (with a special focus on high-impact publications and research funding management), a statement of research interest and three professional references by email to era-chair@muni.cz. Alternatively, applications may be mailed to: ERA Chair, Search Committee; Central European Institute of Technology; Žerotínovo nám. 9, 601 77 Brno, Czech Republic.

Applications should be submitted by 30th April 2014.

Review of applications will commence immediately after the deadline. Short-listed candidates will be invited to Brno, Czech Republic for an interview and public presentation within two months of the deadline.

Information and updates regarding the ERA Chair position are available at www.era-chair.eu.

Research infrastructure

CHEMICAL BIOLOGY: Ample instrumentation that enables the solution of complex multidisciplinary problems is available; e.g. high-end NMR spectrometers (up to 950 MHz), equipment for high-end cryo electron microscopy and tomography (including Titan Krios), mass spectrometers, microscopes (confocal, electron), RT PCR, a macromolecular single crystal diffraction system, a universal chemical and protein diffractometer + X-ray and optical protein scanner, a combined AFM/inverted optical microscope, automated crystallization laboratory - liquid handling, AFM microscopy system for nanobiointeractions, automated crystallization laboratory - sample storage and inspection, a computer cluster for simulations of large biomolecular systems.

NANOBIOLOGY: The infrastructure currently available includes Ntegra Vita AFM, Ntegra Solaris SNOM, Biacore 2000 SPR system, fluorescence microscope, cell cultivation facility, infrared spectroscopy and spectro-microscopy, spectroscopic ellipsometry; clean rooms, non-clean room facility; in vivo imaging system with 3D analysis technology, fluorescence microscope with microelectrochemical measurement technology in single cells, fluorimeter, automatic and manual spectrometers, spectrophotometric analysers, capillary electrophoresis with UV/Vis, electrochemical and laser-induced fluorescence detection, liquid chromatography, mass spectrometers, electrochemical analysers, and an electrochemical scanning microscope.

CELL IMAGING: Wide variety of instruments intended to allow for the application and also further refinement of state-of-the-art imaging methodologies: a series of high-end confocal laser scanning microscopes, most of them with live-cell imaging capabilities; wide-field fluorescence microscopes for live-cell imaging with some being robotized; series of electron microscopes including also Titan by FEI with subnanometre resolution; automatic microscopes for high-throughput imaging including analytical software package; AFM microscopy system for nanobiointeractions, robotization for liquid and cell suspension dispensing; microfluidic systems for cell culture including chip production instrumentation; ultra-high-resolution 40 MHz sono system for small animals; imaging system for small animals with fluorescence, luminescence, and RTG capabilities; local and central data storage clusters; and others. Importantly, most of this imaging instrumentation is embedded into an environment/laboratories completely equipped for cell cultures, including variable oxygen, and tissue sample processing.

CEITEC gains another top scientist thanks to the prestigious European Grant

Abstract of the project

The ERA Chair Culture as a Catalyst to Maximize the Potential of CEITEC

The proposed ERA Chair project aims at supporting the on-going structural shift in the culture of the scientific community of Masaryk University by engaging a world-class scientific leader capable of inspiring positive change. Masaryk University has already been deeply involved in this process as the largest contributing member of the Central European Institute of Technology (CEITEC).

CEITEC is a scientific centre in the fields of the life sciences and advanced materials and technologies with the aim of establishing itself as a recognized centre for basic as well as applied research. The CEITEC consortium includes the most prominent universities and research institutes in Brno in the Czech Republic. Thanks to EU Structural Funds, CEITEC is currently in a very rapid stage of development. One of the challenges facing our organization will be to maximize the high potential that CEITEC has at its disposal through cross-disciplinary collaboration.

Within this proposal, we outline the intent to recruit an individual with the commitment to act as an agent of transformation to CEITEC and Masaryk University as a whole, and we will provide the eventual incumbent with a position and the means within the organisation to implement a robust cross-disciplinary program aimed at catalysing the creation of an open, dynamic scientific environment. Thus, we believe transformational leaders are an essential asset, not just for what they can achieve scientifically, but also how they can lead by example.
