PhD Position - Mass Spectrometric Imaging of Biological Tissues

Mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) exploits the ability of mass spectrometry to identify molecules according to their specific mass and image their distribution across the sample. The method allows direct visualization of endogenous compounds (lipids, proteins, saccharides) as well as exogenous drugs and their metabolites.

Supervisor: Jan Preisler
Topic description:
The aim of the research will be development of a suitable matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) MSI method for the study of distribution and the effect of chosen drug selected tissues and cell lines. Special attention will be devoted to sample preparation and matrix deposition (spray, sublimation, piezoelectric dispenser). The samples will be supplied by cooperating institutions (e.g. the Department of Experimental Biology, Experimental and Applied Neuropsychopharmacology, Centre for Neuroscience, the Department of Pharmacology and the Regional Centre for Applied Molecular Oncology). The analysed compounds include endogenous compounds (lipids, glycans) as well as selected drugs.

Requirements:

Successful candidate must hold the equivalent of a Czech Master's degree (Mgr., Ing., MSc.) in the same or similar study programmes from an institution of recognized standing (four or five year undergraduate degree).
